DBM is one of the largest porn studios in Germany

When it comes to success, you have to ask yourself; what does it take to make it? Marketing know-how, charisma, and imagination are just a few key elements in creating a successful business.

Josef Baumberger--known in the industry as Dino—has proven to be more than a success, heading DBM Studios.

DBM is one of the largest studios in Germany. Dino himself is 60 and married to one of the most famous pornstars in Germany: Dolly Buster.

She is also known as Nora Baumberger. Dolly married her former porn producer Josef Baumberger (Dino) in 1997 and ended her career as an actress. Today, she produces movies and works not only at DBM, but also as an author.

Dino, a qualified Radio and TV technician, was the owner of a Sex shop for 10 years before he decided to produce movies in 1985. He started as a one man operation, and today has about 35 employees. He and his lovely wife have 3 dogs (Boxers). We had the pleasure of interviewing Dino about his life, his movies, and his accomplishments.

Q: During the course of your movie-making career, what do you think have been your biggest accomplishments?
A: My biggest success was meeting Dolly Buster, and her becoming a star and market symbol. She’s famous in all of Europe and Russia, making it very easy to market products. Dolly made her last movie in 1996. Everyone knows her in Europe and she has made a total of 30 movies. She loves--and is loved on--TV talk shows, such as RTL, and has made appearances in many mainstream movies. She works with me and also has her own company.
 
Q: Have you won any awards for your movies?
A: Every year DBM has won an award at the Venus show in Berlin, and have 10 awards thus far. We have won a few awards in Barcelona as well, but it is harder to market in that area. Also, there is little noticed change when we win these awards. With no noticeable increase in sales, going to many shows can be more stressful. 15-20 years ago, we went to many US shows, but now we don’t go there because as a foreigner its harder in the states, so we don’t even go to US shows anymore as they’re geared more towards US markets. We really just go to the Venus and that’s about it. We didn’t go to the last Venus.. we sent coworkers, who picked up the award for us. I personally don’t go to the awards anymore. We’re big enough, we don’t have a need to go to every show; it’s more productive to have Dolly Buster go to do interviews or if she’s in the movies or on RTL, the movie station in Germany, rather than going to shows.. have 6-7 million people who watch RTL, and there isn’t a comparable number of people who pay notice to the Venus awards.

Q: What made you decide on making adult movies and becoming a producer?
A: There was a lack of movies when I started. There were plenty of times when I managed my sex shop, I would read a lot of the magazines and looked at the contacts and noticed there was a lack of movies, and there was a lot of demand for intimate jewelry… and there were no movies with that, so I decided to make a movie with intimate jewelry in it, since people were so interested in it. I called around to find someone who would be willing to do that.. and found a woman who was willing to get in front of the camera, under the condition that she have a mask over her eyes. My 1st movie was about 16 minutes long with just music, and 2 women that just played with their piercings, and it was a big success at that time. And then after that, I began to produce the fisting movies. Before that, there had been no fisting movies, and I decided to break into that market. At the beginning, no one really wanted my movies, but over time I managed to get my movies into the open. And once the big guys noticed that the movies were selling, they began to show interest and started calling me.

Q: Can you remember the 1st porn movie you ever watched?
A: That was a very long ago. It was an 8mm on a projector, that’s all I can remember

Q: What’s your favorite type of content to produce?
A: My favorite thing to produce is the content that sells the most. All of this is really just a job for me, and I enjoy what brings me success: “Nothing is more amazing than success�

Q: What’s the strangest movie you’ve ever made/seen? Can you remember a movie you’ve seen where you thought “Wow that’s pretty gross�?
A: I can remember a few. There have always been surprises. I have seen many surprises when I was producing, especially in my 1st fisting movies, where I had to kind of hold my stomach. And also with the intimate piercings because when we produced them, we showed how the piercings were literally done, so that was a bit hard for me. And I had a camcorder on my shoulder, and a camera in my hand and I set it all up by myself.

Q: What kind of advice would you give young studios? For example if I were to say “Hey Dino, I wanna be a producer�..what kind of advice would you give me?
A: I would say let it be; don’t even bother. Especially not in Germany. Don’t do it in Germany, because you have to have a big production if you want to do it, and in the future, the sale of DVDs is going to go down, and everything is going to the internet now, so if you want to produce movies, I would advise you not to do it..  in Germany alone there are about 900 movies that come out every month, so competition is very tough.

Q: How did you come up with the name “Dolly Buster�?
A: Well, Dolly Parton had a lot to do with that, especially with the way both of them look similar, plus at the time you pretty much need an American or English name for your pornstars, so that’s how I came up with Dolly Buster.

Q: How is working with your wife, is it complicated?
A: Yes it’s very very difficult. My advice is to never work with your wife together.. because to be together 24 hours a day is hard after a while. And this is why she does her stuff, and I do mine, and at the end of the day we meet each other at home and play with our dogs.

Q: What’s next for you Dino in the way of adult entertainment?
A: My next project, which I already have on the market in Germany, is to have my movies available on your cellphone on a little clip, instead of buying the DVDs. You can buy a little clip that you can put into your cellphone to watch the movie and you don’t necessarily have to buy the DVD.

Dino has managed to be not only successful in his native Germany, but also abroad in other countries. The next move for Dino and DBM studios: Russia. Working with TV, satellite, and IPTV, Dino is making headway with the popularity of both his movies and with Dolly Buster, who is very famous and well known. A Dolly Buster channel in Moscow is in the works currently, along with other content from DBM to add to the high quality. One thing is certain, Dino is a success not only because of his talent, but also because of his ambition to provide the best.
