The majority of adult Web sites want to dole out treats when you come to their door, but a few of them have some tricks up their sleeves that you might not be expecting.
After a few days of free membership, many porn sites begin automatically billing a monthly fee until you finally catch on and cancel. In some cases, cancelling is not easy.
Adult web sites: PopUps From Hell!
There should be a special place in hell for Webmasters who put us through popup hell. You visit a web site, and when you leave, another browser window pops up. It becomes an endless game, trying to close popups before they load so that they don't launch more popups. Sometimes they pop up a tiny window at the corner of your screen that you don't even notice that periodically pops up even more windows. An example is Cyberotica. Go to their site, and use the back gadget. You wind up at another adult site. Use the close gadget. Another adult site pops up. Try to load a site through your bookmarks. Another site pops up. Try closing the popups and more browser windows popup. On some sites, it gets so bad your browser crashes. This is browser hijacking, and you only choice is to fight back!
Adult web sites: Putting Needles in the Apple
You'd think adult sites would only want viewers who were actually interested in adults looking for erotic material, but they use simple tricks to lure the unwary to their door. One method is to have a Web site address similar to a popular site, such as the adult Web site whitehouse.com. Sure, you meant to go to the official government site at whitehouse.gov, but what are all those naked interns doing there? Another trick is to steal the meta tags (code you don't normally see that helps search engines index a site) from legitimate sites, paste that code into their own site, and then submit it to a search engine. The search engine then winds up sending you to a bogus site, instead of the site you intended.

Adult web sites: PopUps From Hell!
After a few days of free membership, many porn sites begin automatically billing a monthly fee until you finally catch on and cancel. In some cases, canceling is not easy. Even if you are on to the con and try to cancel before the expiration date, you may be charged anyway. Once again, reading the fine print is important. Skip the free tours that require a credit card to prove your age. If they need your card number, expiration date, and billing address, chances are they have every intention of billing you. Also, never give these people your debit card. It does not have the same protections a credit card has. If a charge does appear on your credit card and you are not sure what site it is for, take a look at our guide How To Dispute A Credit Card Charge...
The Lights Are on, But No One Answers the Door
Sometimes referred to as circle jerks, these are the notorious Top 100 Lists. They usually list sites with illegal or extreme content, but clicking on the links just takes you to more list sites. You wander aimlessly in one of the more irritating and pointless of online scams. Its a bit like tic-tac-toe; the only way to win is not to play.
Adult web sites: Who You Gonna Call?
The Ghostbusters won't be able to help you, and neither will the phone company. You download free software for automatic access to an adult site. What you may not realize is that you are not connecting to them via the Internet. Your modem is actually dialing a special phone number in a foreign country with connection charges as high as £4.00 per minute. Talk about a wrong number! There are many complaints and even a recent prosecution, although the phone companies have insisted that the charges appearing on customer's phone bills were legitimate. SO BE CAREFUL...
