How to spot blind links

Blind links are links that are meant to fool you. They tempt you with promises of just what you're looking for, only to send you to some promotional page. You can learn to spot them and save yourself some time and aggravation.

Adult web sites: Here's How:

1. Pass your cursor over a link. The target URL address normally displays in the bottom of your browser.

2. If it is not an address but a description, it has been purposely set this way. This is often a sign of a blind link.

3. If the first part of the address is the same as the site you're on, this is a good sign. However, I have seen some where the address is programmed for you to see one address and get sent to another.

4. If the address has ? near the end, this will most likely be a link to a site paying for traffic. Bad sign.

5. If there is cgi? near the end, avoid the link. This indicates that you may be headed for running a script.

6. If the link description sounds too good to be true, you'll probably end up somewhere else.

7. Watch out for Next Page or Next Photo, particularly the last one.

8. Don't select the Exit or Leave button, it's likely to be a blind link. Use the back button or go to a site of your own choosing.

Remember: A site with one blind link will almost surely have many.

Adult web sites: Blind Link Traps:

The Problem
A search engine description is just what you want. But when you go there it's something entirely different.

The Solution
Notice whether the URL seems to match the description. Learn to view the descriptions with a skeptical eye; promises of illegal content and such are unlikely to be fulfilled. The search engines are a poor way to find erotica due to the widespread deceptive practices used to get listings.

The Reasons They Do It
The search engines are a great source of traffic and sites will go to extremes to get high listings through manipulations of the titles and descriptions. The worst spam the search engines regularly, and these are the sites you DON'T want to find. Some even use totally unrelated descriptions to get around restrictions on erotica listings.

Adult web sites: Blind Link Traps:

The Problem
You follow a link that is supposed to lead to a photo, enter or exit a site, or go to some great content. But you're taken somewhere else.

The Solution
Hone your cynicism. This widespread practice is unavoidable but you learn over time to better judge the honesty of the link. Often the same bullshit is used at different sites to make you click. Watching the status bar at the bottom of the browser will sometimes help - going to a link ending in jpg or gif will be a photo of some sort.

The Reasons They Do It
You are being sent somewhere for a sales pitch or just to a site that is getting advertising revenue when you load the page.

The Problem
OK I looked at the status bar but the URL there was not where I was taken.

The Solution
This is a JavaScript trick and you can turn it off in your browser. You will lose some functionality you might otherwise want to have, though. It also gets rid of most pop-up ads.

The Reasons They Do It
Just more desparate attempts to send you where they want you to go.
