Celebrity sex tapes: Are they the new clip reel?

The second, and arguably most famous, modern celebrity sex tape featured actress Pamela Anderson and her husband, drummer Tommy Lee. The tape exploded on the internet, one of the first to use that medium, and resurrected the flagging careers of both.
But the true turning point for celebrity sex tapes from embarrassing career ender to potential career launcher came in 2004 when heiress Paris Hilton suddenly found herself very much in the spotlight when her ex-boyfriend released a sex video of the two titled One Night in Paris.

Celebrity sex tapes are not a recent development. Jayne Kennedy and her husband had a stolen sex tape released in the Eighties that is widely considered to be the first of its kind. Rob Lowe's career nearly died in 1988 when a sex tape made during the Democratic Convention. Politician Gary Hart lost the 1988 Presidential Nomination largely based on scandalous photos with Donna Rice. In all of these cases, the sex tapes and racy pictures were accidentally released and caused massive harm to the career of the person featured.
The sex tape as career enhancer came about, not coincidentally, just as the internet began to explode into millions of households. Three incidents in particular brought about this change. The first featured disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding, who was most famous for the attack on rival Nancy Kerrigan. In 1994, as her fame was dying down, Penthouse released a video of Harding and husband Jeff Gillooly having sex. The couple initially sued to have the tape blocked but, upon seeing the amount of profit from the tape, publicly endorsed it. This started a career of infamy for Harding, which included pro wrestling, a failed attempt at a music career, and a stint as a celebrity boxer.
